چکیده

Enteric fever(l) and Kala-azar (vis-ceral leishmaniasis) are endemic, in and around Patna. Kala-azar usually has an indolent course but it can present as an acute disease with fever, anorexia and vomiting(2,3). At times both the diseases are so closely similar in their presentation , that differential diagnosis is not always clear, Widal test, inspite of its limitations and fallacies is still widely used as a proof of enteric fever. We found that some of the widal positive patients did not respond to the conventional treatment for enteric fever. Later on they were proved to be cases of Kala-azar (by demonstration of Leishmania donovani bodies, in bone marrow or splenic aspiration) and responded to anti kala-azar treatment. This prompted us to take up a study to determine the behavior of Widal reaction in proven cases of Kala-azar.

Infectivity of Post-Kala-azar Dermal Leishmaniasis Patients to Sand Flies: Revisiting a Proof of Concept in the Context of the Kala-azar Elimination Program in the Indian Subcontinent

We compared xenodiagnosis with quantitative polymerase chain reaction in skin biopsies from 3 patients with maculopapular or nodular post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL). All patients infected sand flies. Parasite loads in skin varied from 1428 to 63 058 parasites per microgram. PKDL detection and treatment are important missing components of the kala-azar elimination program.

Some indication of the value of antimony is the fact that without treatment the death rate from kala-azar is over 90 per cent, whereas with treatment in Indian kalaazar it is reduced to below 10 per cent. Although tartar emetic was found of value in the treatment of kala-azar, its considerable toxic effects made it imperative to obtain other derivatives which should be better to...

The Prognostic Value of the Aldehyde Reaction in Kala-Azar

an attempt to see when these properties attain their normal values during the course of treatment of kala-azar patients, it was found that even after a period of two months after the courses of injections are finished, the serum does not attain its normal value so far as these physical properties are concerned. Simultaneously with these experiments, Napier's aldehyde reaction has also been foll...
